Days or doses
Most prescriptions give a number of days: “twice daily for 10 days”. When the first dose is in the evening, counting 10 calendar days from that evening gives 19 doses, while counting 20 doses runs into the morning of day 11. Both readings are common, so the calculator shows the difference when there is one. The leaflet or the practice can tell you which is meant.
When the label gives a number of tablets instead, divide it by the tablets per dose and choose “A number of doses”. A half tablet per dose doubles the number of doses a strip lasts.
Questions
Does day 1 count as a full day if the first dose is in the evening?
The calculator counts the start day as day 1, as the TailCare app does, so a 10-day course twice a day that starts with the evening dose has 19 doses, not 20. Labels and vets don’t all count the same way, so the calculator shows both answers when they differ. Ask the practice which they meant.
What if the tablets run out before the end date?
Count the tablets against the number of doses here. If they won’t last the course, or there are some left over, ask your vet or pharmacist before stopping or carrying on.
Should I finish the whole course if my pet seems better?
Follow your vet’s instructions. Don’t stop a prescribed course early, or carry one on, without asking them.
This page isn’t veterinary advice. Always follow your vet’s instructions and the medication’s label.
